Identity Theft Types – Synthetic Identities

One of the types of identity theft which has become more common of late is “synthetic identity theft”. This defines a situation in which identities are partially or completely invented – synthesised, hence the name. One common approach is to use a genuine social security number along with a name and date of birth different to those associated with the number. This can be difficult to trace as the problem won’t show up on either person’s credit report but might appear as a completely new file for the credit bureau. It mainly harms the credit lender (but we all pay in the end), although individuals can suffer if they are confused with a synthetic identity.
